Demis Hassabis was born on 27 July 1976 in London to a Greek Cypriot father and a Chinese Singaporean mother. A chess prodigy reaching near-grandmaster level by 13, he studied computer science at Cambridge, completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UCL, and designed the bestselling video game Theme Park for Bullfrog Productions at age 17.
In 2010, he co-founded DeepMind in London — the company that would define the modern era of deep reinforcement learning. Google acquired DeepMind in 2014. In 2016, DeepMind's AlphaGo became the first AI to defeat a world Go champion; in 2017, AlphaZero mastered chess from scratch in four hours, surpassing all previous human and computer chess systems.

In 2020, DeepMind's AlphaFold solved the protein folding problem — a 50-year grand challenge in biology. AlphaFold predicted the 3D structure of virtually every known protein, releasing over 200 million structures to the scientific community for free. The impact on drug discovery, disease research, and materials science has been described as a once-in-a-generation advance.
In October 2024, Hassabis was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside John Jumper and David Baker for AlphaFold's development. He was knighted in the 2025 New Year Honours. He now leads Google DeepMind as it advances across genomics, climate modelling, and mathematics.
